ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University football head coach <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> has announced the 2012 War Hawks’ schedule, the first of the program’s era as an NCAA Division II affiliate. McMurry will be competing as an independent while making the transition from NCAA III to NCAA II.

The ambitious schedule will pit the War Hawks versus a variety of competition and at various levels. The breakdown of McM’s slate of games for 2012 will include two NCAA Division I schools, four with NCAA Division II membership and four NAIA representatives. Just for good measure, the War Hawks will also play one contest versus an international foe.

Both NCAA Division I opponents play in the Southland Conference, a member of the Football Championship Series (FCS). Two teams are members of the Lone Star Conference (NCAA II) and five opponents compete in the Central States Football League.

“I feel that this schedule will be a good test for our program,” Mumme said. “It’s a good test, but at the same time, a very fair and competitive test. We are going to be challenged week-in and week-out against schools that are already competing with scholarship athletes.

“We have the type of athletes here whom I believe will respond very well to the rigors of this schedule. The old adage about iron sharpening iron holds true; as we make the jump to the next level we are going to meet new and progressively more challenging opponents.”

Here is a summary and brief look at each of McMurry’s 2012 football opponents:

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30 – at Abilene Christian University (Abilene, Texas – Shotwell Stadium):
The Wildcats (8-3 in 2011) are NCAA II and Lone Star Conference members … This will be the 40th meeting between the teams, but the first since 1971 … ACU leads the series 24-15 … McMurry’s last win in the series was in 1968 (16-3).

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 – at McNeese State University (Lake Charles, La.):
The Cowboys are NCAA I FCS members and play in the Southland Conference … McNeese was 6-5 overall, 5-3 in the Southland Conference race (good for 3rd place) … McMurry has faced McNeese in the past and owns a 2-0 record against the Cowboys, however the meetings took place in 1957 (7-6) and 1958 (21-0).

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 – Home vs. Wayland Baptist University (Wilford Moore Stadium):
The Pioneers, an NAIA member, reinstated its football program for the 2012 season after a hiatus of 70 years … this will be the first-ever meeting on the gridiron between WBU and McMurry … The Pioneers are members of the CSFL.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 – at Oklahoma Panhandle State University (Goodwell, Okla.):
The Aggies are members of NCAA II and of the CSFL … OPSU was 3-7 in 2011 … This will be the 22nd meeting between McMurry and Panhandle State, with the War Hawks holding the 14-7 edge in the series in which all the meetings took place between 1972-98 … McM won the last meeting, 55-26.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 – vs. Southern Nazarene University (Grand Prairie, Texas):
This is the first meeting between the War Hawks and the Crimson Storm (located in Bethany, Okla.), with the game being played at the neutral, midway site at Grand Prairie, Texas (at G.P.H.S.) … SNU is transitioning to NCAA II this year and moving to the Great American Conference … The Crimson Storm was the CSFL co-champions in 2011, sporting a league record of 4-1 and 9-3 overall.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13 – at Lamar University (Beaumont, Texas):
The Cardinals hold NCAA I FCS affiliation and are members of the Southland Conference … LU was 4-7 overall in 2011, 2-5 in the league (6th place) … McMurry and Lamar have met twice before in football, in 1953 (a 32-27 McM victory) and in 1954 (a 19-13 Cardinals win) … Lamar is in its third season since reinstating football in 2010 after a 20-year absence on campus (1990-2009).

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 – at University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio, Texas):
McM will travel to Incarnate Word in what will be the team’s final road game of the year … The Cardinals are NCAA II and Lone Star Conference members … In 2011, Incarnate Word went 2-8 overall and 2-6 in the LSC (7th place) … The Cardinals are in their fourth season of intercollegiate football and will be facing McMurry for the first time.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27 – Home vs. Langston University (Wilford Moore Stadium):
McMurry will host the Lions in its annual Homecoming Game … Langston, an NAIA member, shared the CSFL championship last year with a 4-1 league record (7-3 overall) … Langston (located in Oklahoma City) and McMurry have met just once previously in football, with the Lions taking a 26-21 decision during the 1990 season.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3 – Home vs. Texas College (Wilford Moore Stadium):
The Steers, playing as members of the NAIA, were 0-11 in 2011 and 0-5 in the CSFL … TC is located in Tyler … The Steers and War Hawks have meet once prior in football, a 2010 meeting won by McM (64-0).

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10 – Home vs. Bacone College (Wilford Moore Stadium):
The Warriors are NAIA affiliates and placed third in the CSFL in 2011 (3-2 league record and 5-6 overall) … Bacone is located in Muskogee, Okla. … The Warriors are 0-1 versus McMurry in football, having lost a 41-6 decision in 2010.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17 – Home vs. University of Mexico (Wilford Moore Stadium):
The Pumas are located in Mexico City … They are coming off of a 6-2 season, losing their championship game by a single point (after going for a 2-point conversion in the title tilt) … The Pumas won Mexico’s national championship in 2010 … The team has scrimmaged several NCAA III teams in the United States, including McMurry last season … The University of Mexico is celebrating playing its 85th season of American football in 2012 … The team plays its home games in Mexico City’s Olympic Stadium, home of then 1968 summer Olympic Games.

2/22/2012 12:18:00 PM

ABILENE, Texas – Three years ago, McMurry University shocked many by the fact that the University was able to sign veteran NCAA Division I football coach <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> to come in and revitalize what was then an ailing program. On Wednesday, McMurry President John H. Russell, Ph.D., took the institution’s commitment to War Hawk football to a new and exciting level in announcing that Mumme and the University have agreed on a new multi-year contract.

While personnel regulations prohibit releasing the exact details of the agreement, the announcement sends a clear signal of McMurry’s intentions and purpose for its gridiron program.

“<dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> resurrected McMurry’s football program,” Dr. Russell said in announcing the agreement. “In his three years in Abilene, he has infused the team, the campus and the community with a much-needed shot of his infectious enthusiasm for War Hawk Football. He brought winning back to the field and excitement to our gameday experience.

“McMurry University’s Board of Trustees felt that Coach Mumme and his staff had an impact on McMurry University that extended beyond the confines of Wilford Moore Stadium – their presence had inspired a number of positive changes across the campus and in the community. In the view of the Board, the impetus for McMurry’s move to NCAA Division II was the ability to attract and retain better students, not just better athletes, and Coach Mumme’s initial recruiting class reflects his commitment to that principle.”

“<dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> has become synonymous with McMurry Football and we want to make sure that the message is sent loud-and-clear – to recruits and others interested in supporting our program – that Coach Mumme will be the face of the War Hawks for the long haul.”

From his perspective, Mumme is appreciative that the University has recognized the work and goals he has for McMurry Football.

“First and foremost I would like to thank Dr. Russell and the Board for making this happen,” Mumme said. “It is rewarding – and at the same time humbling – when those above you recognize the positive things you have tried to bring to the table.

“Stability and consistency are very important to those interested in being a part of a football program. In all that we are trying to do for McMurry Football – from recruiting to marketing to community involvement – this now puts us in a situation where we can speak in terms of the future with greater clarity.”

While the contract is the first of its kind for the University, it is a move that is entirely consistent with McMurry’s upward movement of its athletics program from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II beginning in the Fall of 2012. The deal ensures continuity as the War Hawks’ football program builds toward national prominence at the NCAA II level in the future, as Mumme has done throughout his previous Division I and II career, and at Division III over the past three seasons with McMurry.

“I am very pleased to know we have a coach the caliber of <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> heading our football program for many years to come,” McMurry Director of Athletics <dfn>Ron Holmes</dfn> said. “The message being sent to our current players, recruits, and fan base is the kind of good news McMurry football has deserved for a long time. This announcement is a real shot in the arm and huge step forward for advancing McMurry into a new way of conducting business that will surely occur with our moving to NCAA II.”

Mumme helped McMurry to a 4-6 season in his first year in 2009 with all four wins coming in conference play. After a 0-4 start, McMurry shocked East Texas Baptist Oct. 3, 2009 with a 45-21 win at Wilford Moore Stadium snapping a 17-game losing skid. Mumme and the team used that momentum to win four-straight contests and finished fifth in the nine-team American Southwest Conference, after a projected last-place finish in the pre-season coaches and media polls.

McMurry set or tied four ASC records and 33 school records in the 2010 campaign on the way to a 6-4 season, which matched the record of the last winning McMurry team in 2000. Mumme’s innovative Air Raid Offense ranked No. 2 in the nation in passing while the defense improved from fifth in the ASC to first from 2009 to 2010. The team finished fourth in the ASC with a 4-4 record.

2011 was the War Hawks’ true break-out season as McMurry University’s football team not only qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in school history, but advanced to the second round. The two most prominent national top 25 polls sent the War Hawks out on a high note as the AFCA ranked McMurry No. 15 and D3football.com ranked them 14 in the final polls of the season.

The War Hawks finished 9-3 on the 2011 season and defeated Trinity in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. In a season of firsts, the War Hawks earned national rankings for the first time since the 1999 season.

The War Hawks landed the Offensive Player of the Year in the ASC in quarterback <dfn>Jake Mullin</dfn>. 14 other players were honored on the all-conference team, six earned D3football.com All-South Region honors and three brought home All-America accolades. Mumme was named D3football.com South Region Coach of the Year, as well.

The 2011 War Hawks also earned NCAA III statistical championships for both total passing offense (346.2 y.p.g.) and for net punting (41.2 y.p.g.). Mumme’s offense also brought national attention to McMurry recently when Mullin was honored on Super Bowl Sunday on ESPN2 for having the nation’s top weekly collegiate performance by a quarterback in the 2011 season (the only non-Division I athlete in the balloting).

Just as important to Mumme and his staff is the fact that – in their three seasons – McMurry football players have brought home a total of 30 ASC Academic All-Conference awards.

“Through this deal, we are recognizing the excellence and competitiveness Coach Mumme and his staff have brought to our football program,” Dr. Russell added. “Additionally, we are recognizing Coach Mumme’s firm expectation that his players be exceptional students in the classroom as well – the parents of our student-athletes should expect no less from all of us at McMurry.”

ABILENE, Texas – When McMurry University’s football team hits the highway for its first football game as an NCAA Division II school, it won’t have very far to go. Head Coach <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> announced today that the War Hawks’ inaugural contest of the NCAA II era will be played on Thursday, August 30, 2012 versus crosstown rival Abilene Christian University at Shotwell Stadium (7 p.m.).

The agreement between the teams is a two-year contract and ACU is the host for both games.

“I am glad we were able to work out the schedule to have that first D-II game be one that will also carry tremendous local interest,” Mumme said. “The Abilene community has been fantastic in its support of our move upward, so this gives them a chance to share in an historic event for our program.

“This game will provide our team with a stiff challenge out of the blocks. We know ACU will certainly be ready to play and I expect the same from our team when it takes the field.

“This will be a great event for Abilene!”

The upcoming clash between the War Hawks and Wildcats will be the first meeting between the schools on the gridiron since the 1971 season, a span of 39 seasons without a meeting. The last time these two teams met in football: gas was 40-cents a gallon; a first class stamp was eight cents; China was first admitted to the United Nations; the 26th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified (lowering the U.S. voting age to18); Disney World opened; Mariah Carey was born; Richard Nixon was president, and; popular songs included “Knock Three Times (Tony Orlando and Dawn), “Maggie Mae (Rod Stewart) and “Brown Sugar” (Rolling Stones).

ACU won that 1971 match-up, 53-20, and has a three game win streak going versus McMurry. The Wildcats lead the overall series, 24-15-0.

McM’s last win over Abilene Christian came during the 1968 season, 16-3.

The game will also showcase two of the nation’s outstanding quarterbacks. ACU’s Mitchell Gale threw for 3,823 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2011. McMurry signal-caller <dfn>Jake Mullin</dfn> went aerial for 3,371 yards and 29 TDs.

McMurry will be announcing its full 2012 football schedule in the near future.

ABILENE, Texas – The state of Texas DID find itself with a winner on Super Bowl Sunday.

McMurry University quarterback <dfn>Jake Mullin</dfn> – a product of Burleson High School in the Dallas/Fort Worth area – pulled off one of the biggest upsets since David slew Goliath by winning the FRS Quarterback Performance of the Year contest. The results of the fan voting (conducted via social media) were announced as a part of the 2012 All-Star Football Challenge show on ESPN2 prior to Sunday’s Super Bowl game.

Mullin was joined by several dozen teammates, War Hawk fans and staff to watch the announcement in McM’s Campus Center.

“It’s awesome,” Mullin said of winning the award. “Hopefully, this gets (the McMurry) name out there even more. I just want to thank everybody who supported me; that voted for me. If it wasn’t for them, there’s no way I could have done this.

“I’m getting the honor, but it’s more of a team thing because the receivers make plays for me and the linemen block. There’s no way I could have done it without them.”

Mullin out-distance such notable weekly winners from the college football season as Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III (Baylor), projected No. 1 NFL Draft pick Andrew Luck (Stanford) and next year’s Heisman hopeful Matt Barkley (USC) to win the award. The junior signal-caller was the only non-NCAA Division I nominee in the voting (McMurry is an NCAA Division III school).

“This is a fantastic honor for both Jake and for McMurry University,” McM Head Coach <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> said. “Just to have Jake mentioned in the same sentence with some of the names of the other nominees was a high compliment. For him to have won the contest was a testament to Jake’s skills and abilities as a quarterback, as well as his knowledge of our offensive system.

Mullin’s award-winning performance came last October 15 versus Texas Lutheran University, when he threw for 614 yards and four touchdowns in the War Hawks’ 60-16 victory over the Bulldogs.

In that game, Mullin completed 43-of-57 passes with no interceptions, on his way to setting both the school and American Southwest Conference records for passing yards in a game. His efforts also helped the McMurry team set an NCAA III record for total offense in a game with 848 total yards.

Mullin will return for his senior season at McMurry in 2012 and be leading the program as the University’s athletics program moves to NCAA Division II beginning in the Fall of 2012. Mullin was a nominee for the 2011 Gagliardi Award as the top player in NCAA III. Mullin, the ASC Offensive Player of the Year and first-team all-ASC member, passed for 3,371 yards and 29 touchdowns in 11 games while completing 64 percent of his passes. Early in the season, he became McMurry’s all-time passing yardage leader and, through three seasons, has amassed 8,979 passing yards and 89 touchdown passes.

“I’m looking forward to Jake being able to showcase his talents at the D-II level next season,” Mumme added. “People are going to see that his ‘tools’ as a quarterback will transcend whatever level of competition at which he plays.”

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University football Head Coach <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> introduced his “Class of 2012” on Wednesday evening, a list of 18 student-athletes who will be the cornerstone of the War Hawk program’s transition to NCAA Division II beginning in the Fall of 2012.

The group will also be among the first student-athletes on the McMurry campus to receive athletic scholarships since the 1976-77 season.

As one examines the demographics of the “Class of 2012,” not surprising perhaps is the fact that no less than 13 of the newcomers will be on the offensive side of the ball and should enhance Mumme’s “Air Raid” offense. The largest number of recruits were at the wide receiver position, where all five come in with both good credentials and good size. The quintet all stands better than 6-foot, with two of them checking in at 6-foot-3.

Up front on offense, McMurry brought in some sizeable protectors. Among the four men added to the offensive front – charged with giving the War Hawk quarterbacks time to scan the field in the high-powered scheme – three check in at 300 pounds or better. The incoming “O-line” has an average size of 6-foot-4 and 294-lbs.

Mumme has also added three running backs to the McM stable, as well as a state championship quarterback.

On defense, the initial “Class of 2012” members includes two safeties, a defensive end, as well as a state championship and all-state linebacker. One special teams player – a kicker/punter – rounds out McMurry’s first wave of recruits for 2012.

As far as the high school supply line goes, three players will be coming from 3A state champion Wimberley (Brady Lambert, QB; Nick Alana, LB; Taylor Robertson, OL), along with two each from Denton Guyer (Josh King, K/P; Ryan Williams, S) and Smithson Valley (Easton McIntosh, WR; Nolan Nasis, OL).

Mumme’s group will have some local flavor with one recruit each from Abilene (Paxton Grayer, RB), Abilene Cooper (Garrison Railsback, DE), Brownwood (Stehl Ratliff, RB), and San Angelo Central (Corey Lopez, WR).

Burleson (Barrett Cain, WR), Sachse (Billy Cole, RB), Ft. Bend Hightower (Ryan Nelson, WR), Corpus Christi Moody (Charlie Thornton, OL), A&M Consolidated (Brett Mahnke, S), Allen (Jake Trotter, OL) and Grand Prairie (A.J. Singleton, WR) all contributed one player, as well.

Three of the new War Hawks will also be bringing Academic All-State credentials in as a part of their résumés.

“I think that this group will be a great compliment to the outstanding things the players over the past few seasons have accomplished here,” Mumme said. “This group will also be integral as we make that move toward full NCAA Division II membership and the type of young man we want to represent McMurry University Football.

“We obviously want a high-caliber athlete. But just as important is that we have individuals who can carry the name of McMurry – as well as the city of Abilene – to other places as we compete and be good ‘ambassadors’.”

Diamond, who had already been selected as third-team all-American by D3football.com, earns his second all-America selection after a highly productive season at tight end. Diamond led the War Hawks in receptions and yards with 71 and 930 respectively while catching eight touchdown passes.

Full 2011 D3football.com all-America teams

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Unviersity seniors <dfn>Will Morris</dfn> and <dfn>Delfonte Diamond</dfn> were honored for their play in the 2011 football season by D3football.com as all-Americans. Morris, a senior free safety, landed on the second team for the second-straight season and Diamond, the senior tight end, was a third-team selection in his final year with the team.

Morris anchored a secondary that had the best pass defense in the American Southwest Conference for three straight seasons. The Katy native finished with 90 tackles, three forced fumbles, five interceptions and five pass breakups. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns throughout the season and compiled 31 tackles in McMurry’s two playoff games to close the year.

“He’s just been a real warrior for us on defense and kind of the leader back there,” said McMurry University head coach <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn>. “He’s going to be a guy that’s going to be hard to replace back there.”

Diamond led the team in receptions and receiving yards with 71 and 930 respectively while grabbing eight touchdown passes in the process. He surpassed the 100-yard mark three times and caught multiple touchdown passes twice. One of his season’s highlights was catching the winning touchdown pass with 19 seconds to play in a McMurry win over NCAA Division I FCS UT-San Antonio Sept. 10 at the Alamodome.

“I’d like to see those other two, it would be hard to believe there’s anybody better at tight end than Delftonte,” Mumme said of the third-team selection from Houston. “Every time we needed a play this year it seemed like he was there for it.”

The War Hawks finished the season at 9-3 and were ranked the highest the program had ever been ranked in its tenure in the NCAA Division III at No. 14 by D3football.com and No. 15 by the AFCA.

“I’m really proud of our seniors and our kids and the whole institution for the way everybody stepped up and had a good season,” Mumme said.

McMurry’s playoff appearance was the first of any NCAA team in the school’s history and the War Hawks’ playoff win over Trinity Nov. 19 was the first postseason win of any kind in the program’s history. The historic season helps put a close to McMurry’s era in the NCAA Division III.

“I think it was a landmark season because it was the last in Division III. We’re moving on to Division II and I think for us to finish with the only Division III playoff spot is poetic justice,” Mumme said. “We accomplished all our goals except one in getting past Mary Hardin-Baylor and winning conference. We weren’t able to do that but we were able to do a lot of other good things.”

McMurry lost to No. 3-ranked UMHB in the regular season 28-27 Sept. 17 and then again in the playoffs to the No. 4-ranked Crusaders Nov. 26 to end the season.

The War Hawks landed 15 players on the all-conference teams and six on the D3football.com all-South Region squad including Mumme as South Region Coach of the Year.

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University’s football team ended Nov. 26 in Belton with a loss in the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs, but the two most prominent national top 25 polls send the War Hawks out on a high note as the AFCA ranked McMurry No. 15 and D3football.com ranked them 14 in the final polls of the season.

The War Hawks finished 9-3 on the season and defeated Trinity in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs Nov. 19. In a season of firsts, the War Hawks earned the program’s first NCAA Division III playoff appearance after an 8-2 regular season along the way earning national rankings for the first time since the 1999 season.

McMurry began the season with an 82-6 loss to NCAA Division I FCS Stephen F. Austin before rebounding to defeat FCS UT-San Antonio at the Alamodome in front of 34,000+ fans Sept. 10. From there, McMurry trailed No. 3-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor 28-6 before storming back to score 21 unanswered points and fell 28-27 in Belton after a two-point conversion with less than two minutes left failed that could have won the game.

However, from there, McMurry won seven straight games including a win over cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons, which hadn’t been done since 1963. Also during the streak, McMurry defeated nationally-ranked Louisiana College on the road and solidified a playoff spot by finishing second in the American Southwest Conference.

The War Hawks landed the Offensive Player of the Year in the ASC in quarterback <dfn>Jake Mullin</dfn> and 14 other players were honored on the all-conference team while six earned D3football.com all-South Region honors. Head coach <dfn>Hal Mumme</dfn> was named D3football.com South Region Coach of the Year.

Coincidentally, the national ranking by the Division III polls sends the school out on a high note as the university begins its transition to the NCAA Division II beginning in the 2012-13 school year.

The War Hawks finished the season 9-3 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Diamond, the senior tight end, and Morris the senior free safety were honored as first team members while junior quarterback <dfn>Jake Mullin</dfn>, senior offensive guard <dfn>Bertrick Ervin</dfn>, and junior cornerback <dfn>D.J.
Mumme took over McMurry’s program that went 0-10 in 2008 and 16-63 from 2001 to 2008 and turned the War Hawks into a playoff team by his third season. Mumme led the team to a 4-6 record in 2009, a 6-4 mark in 2010, and tied the school’s record for wins with a 9-3 season this year.

The War Hawks defeated Trinity Nov. 19 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs for the program’s first playoff victory of any kind. McMurry’s season came to an end the next Saturday in a loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Diamond, the Houston native, caught 71 passes for 930 yards and eight touchdowns in 12 games this season for the War Hawks. He was a first-team all-American Southwest Conference selection earlier this season.

Morris earned his second-straight first-team all-region honor from D3football.com finishing the year with 90 tackles, five interceptions, five pass breakups, three forced fumbles and one recovery.

Mullin, the ASC Offensive Player of the Year and first-team all-ASC member, passed for 3,371 yards and 29 touchdowns in 11 games while completing 64 percent of his passes. Earlier in the season he became McMurry’s all-time passing yardage leader and through three seasons he has 8,979 yards passing and 89 touchdown passes.

Ervin followed up his first-team all-ASC selection with the all-region honor. He anchored an offensive line that boasted the No. 1 passing offense in the nation and allowed only four sacks all season long on 556 team pass attempts. He also led the team in pancake blocks and along with Diamond was a four-year player who saw McMurry go winless his freshman season to a playoff team when he left.

Baiza had an all-around season for McMurry at defensive back and return specialist. He blocked three kicks, returned two punts for touchdowns while adding 44 tackles, five interceptions, seven pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

<dfn>Corey Hall</dfn> led the team with 14 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, forced four fumbles, blocked two kicks, intercepted a pass and was credited with five quarterback hurries to accompany 52 tackles.

D3football.com began handing out all-America awards in 2003 and all-region honors in 2005. Morris and Desmond Baker were each the first McMurry players honored with all-South Region honors in 2010.
