Coach Hal Mumme has been in the coaching profession for thirty two years and has experience at almost every level in football. So the number one question on most people’s minds is how did the “Air Raid” come to existence? First it is important to understand that football is an exciting and strategic game that most coaches in this business have developed and plagiarized ideas and schemes from others. Coach Mumme credits his success in this system to compilation of great coaches such as: Lavell Edwards at Brigham Young University, Bill Walsh and 49ers, June Jones at SMU and Mouse Davis at Portland State. Over time Hal Mumme’s system has spread like wild fire thru the ranks of football everywhere! Here is a look at Coach Mumme’s history and the birth of the “Air Raid”.

1976 – Moody High School – Assistant Coach

1979 – Aransas Pass High School – Head Coach

1980 – 81 West Texas State – Wide Receiver and QB Coach

1982 – 85 UTEP – Offensive Coordinator
*fascination with passing game begins after playing against BYU.

1986 – 88 Copperas Cove High School – Head Coach
Air Raid – takes Flight in Texas High School

1989 – 91 Iowa Wesleyan College – Head Coach

  • Mike Leach joins staff (Texas Tech Head Coach)

1992 -96 Valdosta State University – Head Coach

  • First playoff berth in 1994
  • Gulf South Conference Champions in 1996

1997 – 01 University of Kentucky – Head Coach

  • First New Year’s Day Bowl – Outback Bowl ‘99
  • #1 Draft Pick in 1999 – QB Tim Couch
  • Back to Back – Music City Bowl ‘00

2003 – 04 Southeastern Louisiana University – Head Coach

  • Brought Football back after 18 years
  • #1 Offense in Nation 2004
  • 2004 defeated #3 ranked McNeese

2005 – 08 New Mexico State University – Head Coach

  • Chase Holbrook – All time leading passer NMSU
  • Chase Holbrook – 4th All time Passing in WAC

2009 – Present McMurry University
